John Burkhalter, Independent Scholar and member of The Practitioners of Musick, presents pre-concert talks for The Brandywine Baroque performances of “ The Lord of the Manor,” March 14th through March 16th, 2025
William Jackson (1730-1803) composed “The Lord of the Manor” to General John Burgoyne’s (1722-1792) libretto. This comic opera was first produced at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane [London] in 1780. Considered Jackson’s most successful dramatic work, “The Lord of the Manor” was one of several plays written by Burgoyne after his defeat in the American War for Independence.
The performances by Brandywine Baroque, based in Wilmington, Delaware, mark the first time the comic opera has been performed in America.
